Braun GmbH is a German company that manufactures small electrical appliances. It was founded in 1921 in Frankfurt am Main. In 1967, it was acquired by US group The Gillette Company, which in turn was acquired by Procter & Gamble in 2005. Braun's product range includes electric shavers, kitchen appliances (coffee makers, hand blenders, etc.), electric toothbrushes, hair dryers and clocks. In 2012, Italian company de Longhi acquired Braun's small household appliances from Procter & Gamble, which, however, continues to own the Braun brand.
Engineer Max Braun founded the company in Frankfurt am Main in 1921. It initially produced components of radios, and from 1929 complete radio sets. In 1932, it launched one of the first combined radio record players.
In 1935 it introduced the Braun brand name and the logo with the raised "A". During World War II, Braun produced mainly military radio transmitting and receiving equipment. The factory was completely destroyed in 1944 and it was not until 1947 that production of torches and radio sets modestly restarted.
In 1950, Braun introduced the electric shaver for dry shaving. The Braun Sixtant, launched in 1962, was to become a worldwide success and brought the company to the attention of the US group Gillette.
In 1951, Max Braun died unexpectedly at the age of 61. His sons Artur and Erwin took over the management of the firm.
Braun also produced equipment for film and photography of which the Paxina, a 6x6 still camera, was the most successful. Flash units were introduced in 1952 and production of slide projectors began in 1954. After acquiring the Niezoldi + Krämer company in 1963, Braun released Super 8 cameras under the Nizo name.
The Braun KM kitchen machines were designed in 1957 and would be produced until 1993.
In 1962, Braun became a limited liability company, Braun AG. Gillette acquired a controlling stake in the company in 1967. In the 1970s, audio and hi-fi activities were transferred to a separate company, Braun Electronics, which would cease to exist in 1990. In the early 1980s, the photographic and film division was sold to Robert Bosch GmbH. Braun itself concentrated only on the household appliances market.
In 1998, Gillette transformed Braun into a private limited company (Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung), Braun GmbH. In 2005, Gillette was acquired by Procter & Gamble (P&G), making Braun a subsidiary of P&G.
